Composing the Collection:
Sonifying the Lowe Art Museum's Musical Instruments & Art Works
in Written Music & Live Performance Premiering May 12, 2021
,Originally intended to be a LIVE performance, due to COVID you may enjoy our virtual concert of world premieres of music inspired by objects from the Lowe's Musical Instruments and Art Works Collections and the University of Miami Libraries Special Collections. Guided by distinguished composer Dorothy Hindman (Frost School of Music), whose own music transforms objects into sonic models, each composer on the program selected two museum objects: an instrument and an artwork. Through research, digital recording, spectral analysis, and in consultation with museum and library staff, modern representations of the chosen instrument's sounds were acquired by the composers. Utilizing individualized creative sonic approaches, a new chamber or multimedia work was composed for Duo Sequenza, inspired by these paired objects.
The finished compositions, including Dorothy Hindman's newest work, "Untitled IV," were performed and videotaped at the Lowe Museum by Duo Sequenza in April 2021. The virtual concert premieres via streaming on May 12, 2021. The resultant audio samples, recordings of the new works, and other sonic documentation of the source objects forms the basis of an audio companion to augment Lowe's Guide by Cell.
Financial support by for this project was provided by The Andrew W. Mellon CREATE Grants Program.
