Call for Flute & Classical Guitar Scores:

Honoring Indiana's Bicentennial (2016)

Submission Deadline: December 31, 2016, 11:59 pm Central Time

Duo Sequenza invites the submission of scores for flute and classical guitar for a 2016/17 “Indiana Bi-Sequenz-ennial” Season World Premiere Performance at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso, Indiana on Wednesday, 17 May 2017 at 7:30 pm central time. We are specifically requesting works only by composers who live in, are full-time students in, or originate from the State of Indiana. There are no restrictions regarding age, race, or gender. There is no entry fee.

Works may be scored for C concert flute, alto flute in G, bass flute in C, and/or piccolo in C (one player) and classical guitar. Pieces involving electronics or tape will not be accepted at this time. It is permissible to require re-tuning of the guitar, between movements only.

Works that include extended techniques are acceptable, but all flute vocalizations should be well within an alto voice range. All text must be written in western alphabet, and phoneticized, if necessary.

Scores must be written in traditional western notation, or provide very clear English explanations on any non-standard notation used. Scores must be submitted in PDF format. Hard copies of scores will not be accepted.

Each submitted piece should not exceed 15 minutes. Composers may submit multiple works using a single email. All submitted works should be composed specifically for this project and Duo Sequenza. Pieces must be premieres and not previously performed. Submissions must be original through compositions, not arrangements.

Selected works will be performed by Duo Sequenza on 17 May 2017 in their “Indiana Composers Celebrate National Chamber Music Month” concert. Following the performance, works may be studio-recorded for future release. Selections will be made by Debra Silvert and Paul Bowman and may include input from a panel of professional composers. All decisions are final.

I hereby grant permission for Duo Sequenza to post such recordings on various social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and so on, crediting me as the composer. I further grant the rights of first (studio) recording to Duo Sequenza, to extend for a period of three years from the date of this email. I understand that I will not be reimbursed for travel to the 5/17/17 performance of my work. I retain all other rights as the creator of the submitted work(s).

  • An audio file of the new work(s) is welcomed, but not required. About This Project

Celebrating the State of Indiana’s Bicentennial, Duo Sequenza’s Annual Concert Series at the historic Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso, Indiana is themed “Indiana Bi-Sequenz-ennial!”  The National Chamber Music Month Concert, to take place on May 17, will be Duo Sequenza’s “New Indiana Composers” concert, and will include works selected from this call for scores. The goal to create a performance of new works for flute and classical guitar by composers who live in or originate from Indiana. This project is an opportunity to engage new audiences, connect Indiana composers, explore and celebrate commonalities/differences, and to create professional bonds that may lead to future collaboration.

The preceding concerts in the 2016/17 “Indiana Bi-Sequenz-ennial” series consist of a fall concert, on 16 November, “Around the World in 1816.”  This program places the Indiana’s statehood in an historical musical context, and includes the Midwest Premiere of Gary Schocker’s Crystal Healing, written for the 200th anniversary of Debra Silvert’s Laurent Crystal Flute.  The winter concert, 18 January, will be comprised of Duo Sequenza’s first commission, Rondo Caprice, Op. 35 by the eminent Indianapolis born composer, Easley Blackwood, and Romeo and Juliet by Pulitzer prize winning Ned Rorem, who was born in Richmond. The second half of the program will consist of the World Premiere of South Shore Suite, a major commission composed by Jorge Muñiz of the Radcliff School of the Arts, Indiana University at South Bend.
